NoiseTrade – Tools for Indie Musicians

In my Tools for Indie musicians series (hit the link to see all the posts), I’ve covered 3 different ways to get your music out there. CD Baby and TuneCore both distribute your music to iTunes, Amazon, and the like. BandCamp lets you set up a storefront and sell stuff (or give it away) on your terms. This post is all about NoiseTrade, which is yet another venue for digitally releasing your music.

Visit NoiseTrade.com

I think NoiseTrade is special. It has something the others don’t. At least that’s been my experience. That something special is the exposure factor. For me, no online service or marketing tool has been as successful as NoiseTrade, except maybe for YouTube.

First let’s talk about how the service works, and then I’ll dive into exactly how I use it.

Ustream Acoustic Concert Series

Between leading worship every weekend and regular youth events, I don’t get a ton of opportunities to play live. Well, that’s all going to change. Today I’m performing my first Ustream acoustic concert!

I’m going live at 6:00p Eastern. I’ll play for 30 or 45 minutes – maybe longer if there is some good viewer interaction. You’ll be able to interact using Twitter, Facebook, or the Ustream chat client.

Scheduling

Mondays at 6:00p EST.

My goal is to do these regularly. I’m going to start out with a weekly schedule. Every Monday at 6 eastern.

Where to watch

You’ll be able to watch right here at Brian Wahl Music at the Live page.

I’ll also be live at my Ustream page, or on Facebook.

My interview at the Scripture to Music Collective

You’ve heard me talk about the Scripture To Music collective around here before. If not – definitely go check it out. The site is run by Caroline Cobb and it is an awesome resource of Biblical songs. I’ve got a few songs featured over there as well.

Just a few weeks ago, Caroline interviewed me for the site.

Click here to read the interview.

I shared a bit about my songwriting process, my favorite songwriters, and more.

Giving Away Your Music For Free – Tools For Indie Musicians

This post is part of the “Tools for Indie Musicians series. See all the posts here.

This is more of a strategy than a tool, but strategies are tools, right?

All of my original music is free. I’m going to explain my strategy in this post, but first, let’s look at this idea from both sides.

Argument against free downloads

You can do a google search and read tons of opinions on artists giving away their music for free. Many are passionately against the idea. I’ve read a lot of arguments against giving away music, and I’ll sum them up with this statement:

Giving away your music for free cheapens it. You put lots of work into creating music, and if you believe it is valuable, you shouldn’t just give it away. Furthermore, it harms the entire music industry, conditioning fans to expect to listen to and download music for free.

Why I choose to give my music away free

I believe the argument for giving away music is stronger. So, this is why I give away my music for free.

  • I am an unknown artist. Sure – I may have more than 2 or 3 twitter followers, and my mailing list has more than 13 emails on it, but in the grand scheme of things, I’m totally 100% an unknown.
  • As an unknown artist, exposure is worth way more than money.

Unfailing Love (Single) – Free Music Friday

A Free Music Friday bonus release! I guess I just got too excited and had to release two singles this month.

Download from iTunes ($0.99)

Download the chord chart

This song is based on Psalm 57. My favorite part of the Psalm is also the bridge of the song, and it states:

Be exalted, O God, above the highest heavens. May your glory shine over all the earth.

This song will remain free through NoiseTrade until October, when the next free song is released. If you download through NoiseTrade, you’ll get the acoustic version as well.
