Sunday Set-List: February 27, 2011

I woke up this Sunday morning feeling pretty terrible. I’ve been nursing a cold lately, and this Sunday was the worst day by far (I’m better now…). During the sound-check, it became obvious to me that I could sing about 2 songs and then my voice was gone. Good thing we don’t need perfect pitch to worship!

Set List (same for both services)

  • Revelation Song – Kari Jobe version – this was our pre-service song
  • He Reigns – Newsboys
  • Mighty To Save – Hillsong United
  • Hosanna – Hillsong United
  • How Great Is Our God – Chris Tomlin – this was after the message

As usual, you can get chord charts for all these songs on the charts page.

Annette led the first service, and wow – she rocked Revelation Song. It’s new for both of our churches (we have one band that leads for two different churches), which is why we put it as the pre-service “performance” song. We’ll schedule it next week, and I’m going to ask Annette to come up and lead it again.

All in all, a great morning. The band has heard lots of compliments from people in the congregations. Just goes to show – even if we feel terrible, we can freely worship and lead others to do so as well.

Help me record a new song

I wrote a new song a few days ago as part of the 2011 songwriting challenge, and I’d like you to help me record it. I’ve got a basic demo going. Have a listen to it here:

I Have A Plan For You (demo) by Brian Wahl

I thought it would be cool to let you all listen to this and add your input.

  • What do you like about it?
  • What do you think I should add?
  • Put some drums in there, maybe?
  • Is the mix off?

2011 Songwriting Challenge: The Songs I Wrote in January

In January 2011, I decided to take part in a songwriting challenge. The challenge: write three songs per month in 2011.

January is over, and here are the songs I wrote:

Unfailing Love (Psalm 57)

“Unfailing Love” is from Psalm 57. Even though we go through hard times, and even when we think there is no hope, we can trust in God’s unfailing love.

Redemption

Next is a song called “Redemption”. Based on Romans 5:6-11. My favorite part of the passage is that God, while we were still sinners, provided a way for us to be saved through his Son. He offered us redemption.

I Will Send My Son

This one is called “I Will Send My Son”. It’s a pretty simple song written from the perspective of God. I’ll have to say, it’s a bit intimidating writing from the perspective of God. I tried to tell the story of how God pursues us and is good to us even though we seem to do everything in our power to reject Him.

God Is My Helper

“God is my Helper” is straight from Psalm 54. My favorite part of that Psalm is the line “Come with great power, O God. Defend me with all your might”. Awesome stuff.

That does it for my January of songwriting. And what do you know – I wrote four songs instead of three! Participating in this challenge has been awesome so far.

In-Ear Monitors: How To Do It Cheap

In my experience as a worship leader, monitoring is always a sensitive subject. Everybody wants to hear more of themselves, and if you’re not careful, the stage monitor volume soon muddies up the room mix, and nobody can really hear themselves very well. It’s a headache for musicians and sound engineers alike. If you’ve been lucky enough to use in-ear monitors, you know how awesome they are, and they eliminate lots of problems.

Now, the churches where I lead worship don’t have huge budgets for an Aviom system or something like that, but we have figured out a way to use in-ear monitors on a very, VERY modest budget.

Before we start, I should point out the two biggest flaws in this system:

  1. It’s not wireless
  2. You can’t get an individual mix for each musician (though you can get 4 individual mixes)

But here are some reasons that it’s great:

  1. It’s cheap. Really cheap. This is the biggest draw by far. Literally – under $200 and you’re set.
  2. You can use it as a hybrid system, meaning you can have traditional wedge monitors and in-ear monitors.

1000 YouTube Subscribers!

Wow – kind of crazy! I remember putting up my very first video ever (an acoustic version of “Fire Fall Down” by Hillsong United), and I never, ever thought I’d one day have 1000 subscribers.

A big thanks to all of you who have watched my videos and especially to those of you who have subscribed.

Some interesting notes about my videos:

I have 95 videos up currently – and no idea how many minutes of footage there are. I’d say somewhere around 5 hours or so. Almost all of them are music videos of some kind, either original songs, worship songs, or cover songs.

My most popular videos (according to view count):

Sunday Set-List: January 16, 2011

Flow:

  • Jesus Paid It All – Kristian Stanfill (pre-service)
  • Grace Like Rain – Todd Agnew
  • Breathe – Marie Barnett
  • Our God – Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman
  • The Heart of Worship – Matt Redman (after the message)

This was a great Sunday for both Evergreen and River Oaks. At Evergreen, Ed spoke about Abraham, and challenged us to think about what we really worship. What do we spend the bulk of our time and money on? At River Oaks, Bill spoke to us about how to make a difference to change the world, part of the “Change the World” sermon series.

“Breathe” was really, really great this morning. The band really nailed “Grace Like Rain”, which was a lot of fun. “Our God” is a newer song for both churches, and I’ve already heard lots of very positive comments about it.

Favorite Worship Songs: Beautiful by Phil Wickham

I first heard about Phil Wickham when he was giving away his “Singalong” album for free. That album has become one of my favorite worship albums ever. It’s just him and a guitar (and a whole bunch of people singing with him). His command of the music with just an acoustic guitar is impressive, and he really inspires you to worship along with him.

“Beautiful” is one of my favorite songs on the album. I’d say it’s not my favorite song lyrically, but it is musically. For some reason, he did not include the song when he re-released “Singalong”. You can get the “Singalong” album on iTunes here.

Another note: this song appears on the “Cannons” album under the title “You’re Beautiful”.

Are You A Songwriter? Then Write Some Songs With Me. 2011 Songwriting Challenge

I’ve written a few songs (get them all free here), but I’d like to write a lot more. I found out about a pretty unique challenge and opportunity over at The Songwriter’s Cafe, hosted by All About Worship. The challenge is simple; write one song a month. If you’re ambitious, write three songs a month. You can submit those songs to the Songwriter’s Cafe, and every couple months or so, they’ll choose one to feature on their website. Pretty cool!

Here are the songs I’ve written so far (this list will keep growing…)

January 2011:

Unfailing Love, Redemption, I Will Send My Son, God is My Helper

Yep, I wrote four, and you can hear them all by clicking the link above.

February 2011:

I Have A Plan For You

March 2011:

Come Find Rest

April 2011:

Though I Walk Through The Valley

May 2011:

No Perfect Son

June 2011:

Didn’t write anything in June :(

July 2011:

Seasons (re-write of an older song)

August 2011:

Our Father Is A Good Man

I initially found out about this via Ryan Egan (@iamanoffering), a Twitter-friend of mine and worship leader from South Dakota. He said he was taking the challenge and wanted to know if anyone would do it with him. Ryan and I, and another friend and fellow worship leader, Alastair Vance(@alastairvance) are going to take on the challenge together.

Want to do it with us? Send me a message on Twitter (@brian_wahl) or respond to this post. I’m going to commit to at least one song a month, but I’ll try for as many as I can. I’ll post them up here as I get them recorded.

Sunday Set-List: January 9, 2011

Flow:

  • Everything Glorious – David Crowder (before the service)
  • Forever – Chris Tomlin
  • Indescribable – Chris Tomlin
  • Blessed Be Your Name – Matt Redman
  • How Great Is Our God – Chris Tomlin (after the message)

Wow – Chris Tomlin Sunday! Ha! Today Annette lead the singing for Evergreen Community Church, and I lead for River Oaks Community Church (both churches share the same building, and the same worship band). Annette did an awesome job, as usual. It was pretty fun for me just to play guitar and sing along (but not into a mic!).

Highlights of the morning were “Blessed Be Your Name” and “How Great Is Our God”. We ended “How Great Is Our God” by singing the “How Great Thou Art” – it was a powerful way to end the service.
