About

I am a worship leader and youth pastor at River Oaks Community Church and Evergreen Community Church in Raleigh, North Carolina (but I live in Durham). I’m also an indie musician and home recording/video nerd. Hit up the Music page and the Videos page to listen to the music I write, plus covers of lots of worship songs and some secular stuff.

You might also be interested in visiting the Worship Tutorials section, where I’ve got a growing list of video tutorials and chord charts. I post regularly in the blog section about all sorts of stuff mostly related to worship, recording, and what it’s like to be a not-very-well-known indie artist.

A few more things about me…

  • I’m married to a research scientist named Angela
  • We have 2 cats, Sam and Noi (that’s pronounced NO-E)
  • We live in Durham, North Carolina
  • I’m totally addicted to coffee
  • I was born on August 13, 1979
  • U2 is my all-time favorite band
  • I’m a sucker for Apple products

Finally, let’s have some fun. I’d like to play a little game with you. I call it “2 Truths and a Lie” (here’s the youth pastor in me…).

It goes like this: I’ll say 3 things about myself. Two of the will be true. One will be a lie. Tell me what you think the lie is in the comments, and I’ll email you and let you know if you got it right. There may or may not be a prize involved.

  1. When I was a little kid, I tricked my younger brother into eating dog food by telling him it was crushed up peanut butter cookies.
  2. I played football in college (linebacker), and my sophomore year I set the school record for the number of tackles in a single game.
  3. When my brother (see number 1) and I were little, we got a Nintendo for Christmas. It took me 5 days to beat Super Mario Brothers.

  1. Hey Brian, Great videos! I watched “Our God” Do you have a tutorial on how you’re making them? That would be interesting, I’d like to learn how to do the chord chart, close up on the hands thing.

OK, to win my prize – as much as I’d like to believe # 2 is true, you look too skinny to me to have played linebacker, maybe safety, so I say #2 is … a lie, 1 and 3 are true.

    And the truth is ??????

    • Hey Rob!

Thanks for playing, my friend! I emailed you the answer.

I am actually planning to do some posting about how I make videos. I’m in the middle of a “basics of recording” series, and I’m planning to do something similar for video making.

      Thanks for stopping by!

May God Bless you in all your endeavours…………….Amen

    • Noel – that’s awesome! Glad I could help out. Thanks!

I bet you played college ball at a smaller school and own a record! I played that same Mario as a kid and it took me some time to figure it out and beat it so I’ll go with that. I could totally see a brother pair doing what the first one was, ha ha!
    Boomer sooner!

    • Sent you the answer via email. Boomer Sooner indeed!

  4. I found you by searching youtube for a Jeremy Riddle Cover “Sweetly Broken” and then clicked on your chord chart and then…… have been on your site for an hour lol. I really enjoy your tutorials and worshipers heart. Thanks for sharing!

    Blessings,

    Hi Brian!
I’ve really enjoyed checking out your site- some super cool stuff! I especially liked the acoustic version of “Your Love Never Changes.” Did you write that song?
OK, so I love guessing games… I can totally believe that you got your brother to eat dog food. i ate cat food when i was a kid, and nobody had to get me to do it=). I was just curious- hahaha. So it was kind of a guess between #2 and #3, and I am going to guess that #3 is the lie. Well?

    • Hey Rosie – I sent you an email with the results. :)

  6. Hey Brian,

I’ll take the bait . . . I agree with Rob Still; #1 & #3 are truths & #2 is not the truth. (A great interactive idea BTW!)

Great videos and thanks for sharing your music. Blessings . . .

    • Hey Larry,

Thanks for stopping by! I emailed you with the answer.

Great site, Brian. I stumbled upon it via YouTube when looking for the David Crowder version of “How he Loves”. I like your tortial on this version. I’m a novice player and will have to give a try sometime.

As for the game, I’m going to have to say that #3 is definitely true. And while #1 seems like something a kid would do to his younger brother I’m going to have to say that this is false. I can see the linebacker in you…..we’ll see.

    Later,
    Mike

    • Hey Mike,

Thanks for stopping by! Sent you an email with the results of the game.

    About the game…
Well, I think you didn’ t set the school record…

  10. Jason

Enjoy your site, your original songs and your tutorials. Thanks so much!!!
I am guessing that number 1 is false.

  11. Hello there! I know this is kinda off topic but I’d figured I’d ask. Would you be interested in trading links or maybe guest writing a blog post or vice-versa? My site discusses a lot of the same topics as yours and I think we could greatly benefit from each other. If you’re interested feel free to shoot me an email. I look forward to hearing from you! Excellent blog by the way!

  12. Shawn McDowell

Great content! I’m thinking you played football and convinced your bro to eat dog food!

    • Hey Shawn – thanks for stopping by. I sent you an email with the results.

  13. Just curious if there are any blogging websites where I can start a blog that aren’t as well known.. I am already aware of sites like blogger, wordpress, livejournal, xanga, vox, etc. . . Are there any up and coming blogging websites possibly?.

  14. roy
